Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery
In single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS), a single small cut is made on the skin. Surgery is performed with three instruments introduced through this single skin incision. Its is a form of advanced laparoscopic surgery requiring specialized laparoscopic skills.
How is Advanced Laparoscopy Surgery Performed?
By and large the advanced complicated laparoscopic surgical procedures are performed by the traditional multi-port laparoscopic surgery method. Small 5 to 10 mm incisions are taken on skin. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced into tummy by CO2 insufflator. The ports (cannulas) are inserted. The telescope and hand instruments enter tummy through these ports and the surgery is completed.
In selected cases advanced laparoscopic surgeries can be done via Single incision approach. Till date we have successfully done Single incision Extended Cholecystectomy for Early stage cancer of gallbladder, Single incision Stomach large GIST excision, Single incision Fundoplication and also Single incision Cardiomyotomy with fundoplication for Achalasia cardia. All these patients have had a safe Surgery with an uneventful postoperative recovery.
Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Benefits
This kind of surgery offers a number of benefits. In comparison to open abdominal surgery, a patient who undergoes advanced laparoscopic surgery will experience less pain throughout recuperation. Due to the tiny incisions used during advanced laparoscopic surgery, patients frequently recover more quickly than those who underwent open abdominal surgery. Furthermore, compared to open abdominal surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery leaves smaller scars and lowers the risk of infection.
Surgical Hazards Related With Advanced Laparoscopic Procedures
Every surgical procedure, no matter how advanced the technology used or how skilful the treating medical team is, always carries a small associated risk of complications. Time taken for Laparoscopic surgery is longer than that with open abdominal surgery. Every patient is at risk of Bleeding inside, Organ or blood vessel damage, Infection, risk to life, etc. By and large surgery today is very safe and the risk is almost equivalent to that of driving ones own car on city roads.
